My name is Melissa Cherry and I am the Defence School Mentor at Spring Mountain State School.
I am a Defence spouse of more than 30 years and my own children are at schools locally. I have held a variety of roles within local primary schools since 2013 and previous to this a variety of roles with Defence in the Australian Public Service. I have lived through many of the ups and downs of Defence lifestyle when it comes to relocation, partner absences and supporting children through these events.
Spring Mountain State School (SMSS) is a young school with proud connections to the Defence community. At SMSS the Defence School Mentor (DSMP) program contributes to the welcoming atmosphere of the school so that Defence Force students have the best possible start and support while forging friendship and connections.
The program runs regular lunchtime Defence Hub and activities (some open to all and some exclusively for Defence students) where students can make friendships within the school community in a safe and moderated environment. The program also provides targeted support to students experiencing parental absence or other challenges arising from the Defence lifestyle.
Inevitably, when the time comes for us to say goodbye, part of my role is to prepare and support your children as your family embarks upon your next adventure.
If you are a Defence Family who will be enrolling at Spring Mountain State School please touch base and let me know you are on your way. I look forward to welcoming you into our school community.
My school hours are Wednesday 8:30am to 2:00pm and Friday 8:30am to 2:00pm. You can contact me via the school office or by email to mcher0@eq.edu.au
